Trip to Mongolia

Shamans & reindeer nomads

Experience Mongolia and its spiritual wonders in an authentic and traditional way -
This unique small-group tour, led by a Mongolian German teacher and me, consists of two parts that can be booked separately:

The first part takes us by jeep, following in the footsteps of Genghis Khan, to his birthplace and a well-known Buryat shamanic center in eastern Mongolia, a region that remains largely undeveloped for tourism. We’ll drive for days along dirt roads through the endless steppe, and spend the nights in hotels, yurt camps, and possibly tents. Along the way, we’ll meet shamans, learn about their practices, and perform rituals with them. In addition, I’ll offer a transformative shamanic program based on Mongolian traditions, allowing you to deepen and integrate your experiences with the local shamans on all levels.

In the second part, we travel to visit the Tsaatan, the last reindeer nomads: We fly to Murun and enjoy Lake Khuvsgul near the Siberian border before driving into the wilderness in jeeps and riding horses over the pass to experience the harsh, minimalist life of the reindeer nomads. Along the way, we eat and sleep with nomads in yurts and with the Tsaatan in their tents. Due to the long jeep rides over bumpy dirt roads, intense days of horseback riding, and often inclement weather, this part of the trip is only for adventurers who are willing to forgo comfort and adapt to the local standard of living.

Neet to know

Costs for the program, lodging, and meals are approximately 2,200 Swiss francs per leg of the trip, depending on room occupancy. Only flights, tips, and souvenirs are not included in this cost.

If, as part of your trip to Mongolia, you’d like to visit other areas in the Ulaanbaatar region or more tourist-friendly regions such as the Gobi Desert, Central Mongolia, or the Altai Mountains, you can book these through a trusted local tour operator and combine that trip with ours.

Traveling in Mongolia requires an open mind and flexibility; sometimes there’s no water, sometimes no electricity, and sometimes no gasoline. Therefore, last-minute changes to the itinerary are possible. The nomads’ diet consists of meat with rice or noodles, bread with homemade butter and jam, dehydrated curd products, and milk tea. While hotels and yurt camps usually offer European cuisine in addition to Mongolian dishes such as soup and salad, the nomads will cook for us whatever they have on hand. Therefore, special dietary requests cannot be accommodated during the second part of the trip.
